Aroma: Intoxicating wild red and blue brambleberry mix with an intriguing rusticity redolent of dried herbs Santa Barbara garrigue and roasted meats. White and red tropical flowers weave throughout making this a very enticing and beguiling wine.
Palate: A complex combination of wild red berried fruit and spice are surrounded by a mouth coating and pleasing taste. The overlying presence of Grenache flavors initially brighten the palate, followed by a rich finish complete with hints of dark red/blue fruits, European chocolate and wonderfully sinister hints from the Syrah and earthy Mourvèdre.
Barden Pinot Noir is formed so as to touch the heart, mind, body and soul. It’s wrapped in a cloak of mystery, lightly adorned, and respected. Ours is a swirling worldly vision, moody but aware. We dared and entered this world with trepidation. Pinot Noir is fiend-ishly complex; we realize we are on the road to madness.
We hand sorted and a percentage (depending on the vintage) is whole cluster fermented, we do a 6-10 day cold soak, natural (wild) fermentation, only free-run wine used, no SO2 during maturation on full lees, bottled un-fined and unfiltered. This wine is matured for 10 months in mostly new French oak barriques from Françoise Frères and Ermitage.
This wine was crafted from the top 6 barrels of Sanford & Benedict vineyard. It is a four-clone Pinot Noir, with a partial whole cluster fermentation and only free-run juice was used.
Pressed after fermentation and matured for 10 months in seasoned French oak barrels before being racked one time to blend for bottling.
A fun pack of deliciousness and spicy fruit surrounded by youthful tannins. The overlying presence of Grenache flavors initially impacts the palate, followed by a finish complete with hints of jam, cocoa and dark berry contributions of Syrah and earthy Mourvèdre. It’s just so delicious.

As avid producers, fans and consumers of Grenache based wines, we are constantly reminded how the various terroirs in Santa Barbara County produce such exciting examples of this noble grape. It is as if Santa Barbara Wine Country is the perfect home for the varietal outside of France, and in our opinion, rivals the inherent qualities that make Pinot Noir so beguiling, beautiful and age-worthy.
Once Doug Margerum secured the Estate Vineyard in Los Olivos, we eagerly planted several different red and white Rhône varietals and selections. On the steep rocky hillsides, we thought we could make some exceptional wines from Syrah and Grenache and planted less than one acre of the unique Alban Clone. This is our 2nd release of the Estate Grenache and hope you find it as compelling and rewarding as we do.
Full bodied and refined, rich, with blueberry and dried fruits. Concentrated juicy mid palate encompassed by cola and sweet fruit. Complex integrated tannins complete the framework.
