The Barden wines focus exclusively on the terroir of the Sta. Rita Hills, one of the most exciting places to grow Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah in California. With its diverse, marine-based soils and refrigerated-sunlight climate, the Sta. Rita Hills provides a perfect place for Doug “Barden” Margerum to leverage his years of food and wine experience to make limited amounts of world-class, cuisine-friendly and age-worthy wines.  Eight different wines included.

Have you ever wanted to make wine?  Here is the opportunity to make one barrel of a Red Rhône Blend with Doug Margerum, one of the master winemakers and blenders in California.  You will taste through multiple varietals, barrels and selections of our top scoring wines to customize your own twenty-four case lot!  Witness first-hand and participate in this centuries-long tradition of crafting wine and see how nuanced and complex this process really is.  Subjects will be wide ranging and will include topics such as grape yields, farming, oak regimens and the entire winemaking process.  A special curated lunch for four guests follows the blending session along with the library wines from Doug’s cellar. 

How do wines age? Because Margerum Wine Company is celebrating our 22nd harvest, we have diligently set aside an incredible library of mature wines that have been aging gracefully in perfect conditions. You will enjoy a seated tasting of ten wines from the Margerum Wine Company and Barden library. Compare and contrast these wines with vintage being the only difference between them. This experience will be complemented by a curated selection of cheeses and charcuterie with all the accoutrements.

Since his early experiences as a fourteen-year-old in Châteauneuf-du-Pape on a family European trip, Doug has been absolutely smitten with the heralded wines, food and culture of the south of France.  This life-long appreciation of the region has become an obsession for Doug and the wines from Santa Barbara County have further fueled his goals to make world-class Syrah and other Rhône inspired wines.   Whether it is the four-bottle horizontal of our best Syrah or the six bottle Rhône Sampler, one will see how charming, sophisticated and food-friendly these wines are.
